Thank you all for coming to our callout yesterday!! If you did not get a chance to make to our callout, we would love to have you at our first meeting on September 12th in Third Street Suites 159 at 7pm. And here is an overview of all the things we talked about.
Our first meeting will be on camera basics. Learning how to use your camera to take photos. What focal length should I use? What does shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and how it effects your photo? Focus, raw settings, etc. All of these things and more we will talk about.
Our second meeting will be on smartphone photography with Lightroom mobile sponsored by Adobe. We will go over how to use your phone to take and edit amazing photos. We been working with Adobe and their education team for a while and we love that they passionate about enabling students to create. There will also be a cool giveaway too!
Our full semester schedule can be seen here.
Aside from meeting cool people and learning new photography techniques, there are some opportunities to do freelance photography jobs. Since we get regular emails about this, we have created a Facebook page called Purdue Photography Club Jobs where you can find some opportunities. In addition, another cool opportunity we have during the end of the spring semester is the photo contest. It is a good opportunity to present our photos in a physical form in addition to getting critiques from professionals. To see the details of last year’s photo contest, visit this page.
We also go on club trips. This year we are planning a few including one to practice astrophotography on a night of a new moon. A fall trip to Indiana Dunes National Park (the newest US National Park by the way) to catch some lovely fall colors. And we are also planning a winter trip as well. In the past, this has typically been to Chicago. More details on all of those trips in the near future.
We have a darkroom with the chemicals needed for developing black and white film. If you have any questions about film photography or want to learn how to start, please contact our wonderful advisor, Ming!! This is his email: jianming@purdue.edu
We also have a studio which we are adding a bunch of new equipment including some new studio lights and softboxes. We have also bought some tripods and other mini lights.
Any Purdue student, staff, & faculty can join regardless of skill level or camera you have (or don’t have)!! The membership due is $5. If you also want access to the studio and darkroom, that membership is $20. We will be accepting payments (cash or check – written out to the Purdue Photography Club) at any of our regular meetings. If you just want to check out the club before committing anything, that is cool too!
We want to stay connected with all of you, and we want to help you connect with other photographers with similar interests. Therefore, we have created some interest groups. So whether you like landscapes, macro, street, portraits, etc. – we hope to find you a group where you can get to know and learn from like-minded photographers. You can sign up here.
Lastly, you can follow us on our Instagram page where we want to feature some of your work. Just tag us or use the hashtag #purduephotoclub and we will consider featuring your work. Also, you can join our Facebook group where you can ask questions or share some of your photos as well.
We look forward to this semester and here are some photos from the event all taken by Sid, our club’s vice president.
